Expedite Your Insurance Claim

Being prepared for your insurance adjuster's visit will help expedite your claim

Restoring your home after a major storm or hurricane can be a long and difficult process - even when you have adequate insurance - but being well-prepared for filing your claim can help speed the settlement, which in turn will help you get things back to normal sooner.

The first and most important step is to call your insurance agent to report your loss, or contact the insurance company directly. Then, to prevent further damage, put temporary tarpaulins over roof leaks and attach plastic over any cracked windows.

We have these additional suggestions for starting the cleanup process and expediting your settlement:

  • Before beginning any clean up, take photographs of everything "as is," indoors and out, to show the extent of damage. Make a room-by-room inventory of missing or damaged items, and try to locate receipts for major purchases.
  • Wear boots and heavy gloves during cleanup if there is floodwater, which can be severely contaminated and/or carry snakes and insects.
  • Separate damaged and undamaged property. Remove all damaged upholstered furniture, draperies and other large items to a garage or other area where it can be stored until you can determine whether it can be cleaned, reupholstered or salvaged.
  • Remove all wet carpet and carpet padding, but save a large piece of both carpet and pad to show your insurance adjuster. Once all the wet furniture and carpets have been moved out of the way, remove any standing water and mud that remain and then clean the floor with soapy water and disinfectant.
  • Use disinfectant and soapy water to remove as much dirt and bacteria as possible from hardwood furniture and other solid surfaces.
Advance or partial payment of your claim may be possible. Ask your adjuster about this.
Protect Your Property

As severe weather nears, take steps now to minimize property damage and loss

As many areas brace for severe weather, flooding from torrential rains, storm surge or raging tides may top the list of storm threats. We advise homeowners to take steps now to protect their property and possessions.

  • Make video or photo records of your property, indoors and out. Include pictures of furnishings, electronics, clothes, and your most valuable household items. Also gather any receipts for major purchases. All this will help an insurance adjuster if you need to file a claim.
  • Create an emergency file of documents and information you will need if your home is flooded. Include the itemized record described above, along with your homeowners, auto and flood insurance policies, identification and proof of health insurance, and an emergency supply of cash. Put this file in a safe, flood- and fire-proof place where you can retrieve it easily.
  • Check the outside of your home for items that might come loose and float or blow away, creating even more damage. Such items include patio furniture, awnings, grills, garbage cans, garden tools and large toys. Secure them or bring them inside.
  • Consider measures to flood-proof your house. Some options include: Moving valuable or irreplaceable items to high shelves or to the highest floor in the house; purchasing sandbags; building plywood shutters or, for the future, having hurricane shutters installed. (Taping windows may keep them from shattering, but it won't keep them from breaking.)
  • Review your insurance coverage. Be sure you know what is covered and what isn't. Federal flood insurance is the only insurance that covers flood losses; homeowners insurance doesn't. The government has a 30-day waiting period on most new flood insurance policies, so initiating a policy in advance of severe weather is essential.
  • Don't count on federal disaster assistance. People often overestimate the extent of federal aid. Federal disaster assistance only becomes available when the President declares a national disaster. And even then, federal aid is usually in the form of a small grant or a loan that must be repaid with interest.
If you aren't sure what your policy covers, or if you have other questions about flood insurance coverage, contact us at 800-727-5234.
Make Safety a Priority During Storm Season

Remember that severe weather creates dangers
Once a storm is headed your way - even the garden-variety  thunderstorm - flooding from torrential rains, storm surge or elevated water levels may top the list of storm dangers. Floods are the number-one weather-related killer, so when a flood warning is issued, we recommend taking critical steps in advance to ensure the safety of your family and to minimize damage to your home and possessions.

Flood warnings may be issued anywhere from 24-72 hours ahead of the anticipated flooding, even less in flash-flood situations. We advise taking the following steps during that time:

Emergency Supplies
Make sure your stock of emergency supplies is adequate and that it is stored in a safe, flood-proof place. Include:

  • 1-2 week supply of non-perishable food
  • Enough bottled drinking water to provide at least one gallon per family member per day for at least seven days
  • Battery-operated radio and flashlights with extra batteries
  • Trash bags
  • Paper supplies such as paper towels
  • Toiletries
  • First aid kit
  • Heavy gloves
  • Cleaning supplies, including disinfectant

Clean the bathtub and fill it with water. Obtaining clean water for washing may become difficult during and after the flood, and you will need your bottled water for drinking.

Possible Evacuation

  • Put your homeowners and flood insurance policies in a safe, waterproof place, along with extra cash, proof of identification and other important documents. Be ready to take them with you if you must evacuate.
  • Fill your car with gas.
  • Gather the things each family member will need if you must evacuate. Include clothing, sleeping bags or bedrolls, medicines, personal hygiene items, your flashlight and extra batteries, and baby supplies if you have an infant.
  • Be prepared to follow evacuation orders immediately. If you are not in an evacuation zone and you feel it will be safe to stay in your home, doing so will help minimize already-congested traffic.

Other Safety Measures

  • Check the outside of your house for items that might come loose and blow through windows or float away, such as patio furniture, awnings, grills, garbage cans, garden tools and large toys. Secure them or bring them inside.
  • Know how to turn off utilities at the main switches or valves in case you are instructed by emergency officials to do so.
  • If flooding occurs, stay away from floodwaters and don't let children play in or near them. Floodwater often carries snakes and insects and can be severely contaminated.
  • Don't walk through moving water; six inches of moving water is enough to knock you off your feet. If you must walk, wear boots or sturdy shoes and look for water that is not moving.
  • Avoid driving through flooded areas.
  • Keep a battery-powered radio on hand to monitor conditions and instructions from emergency officials.
Remember that your homeowners insurance doesn't cover losses or damage from flooding. If you're not sure your property is protected, call us at 800-727-5234.
